Atomic heart mother movie12/17/2023 He has opinions about a lot of things and isn’t shy about expressing them. Kami is also a distinctive type, a self-conscious hipster who uses his idiosyncrasies to show that he is different. A jump cut later, they are on the road.Īs the girls giddily cruise the crowded streets of the capital (a favorite activity for youth in a country where gas prices are kept artificially low), they notice their friend Kami (Mehrdad Sedighiyan), sporting an oversized pair of red sunglasses, walking by the side of the road in spite of the hour and the air pollution. We meet them as they stagger drunkenly out of a noisy party after midnight, musing about the cultural history of Western toilets and trashing puerile male pickup lines. Here, the main characters are Arineh (Taraneh Alidoosti, “About Elly”) and Nobahar (Pegah Ahangarani, “Women’s Prison”), a pair of late-twentysomethings who display plenty of brightly dyed hair beneath their headscarves. Like Ahmadzadeh’s debut film, “Kami’s Party,” “Atom Heart Mother” offers a telling portrait of a certain type of educated, upper-middle-class urbanite and their hopes, dreams and uncertainties. Then the topics change, to war themes and those of a dictatorship. While “Taxi,” Jafar Panahi’s humanist take on the Iranian road-movie genre, triumphed in the Berlinale competition, over in the festival’s Forum section his countryman Ali Ahmadzadeh used some of the same Tehran streets by night for his original and disturbing “Atom Heart Mother.” Pitched somewhere between dream and reality, Ahmadzadeh’s surreal pic is an electrifyingly wacko tale of two party girls and their close encounter with someone who may or may not be the devil. Although certain absurdist aspects will prove more meaningful to Farsi speakers, the allegorical elements invite universal appreciation, as do the film’s discussions of nuclear energy and pop culture, and an exuberant rendition of “We Are the World.” It was to introduce the iranian society as it is today, and to end up the first part with the peace song of Michael Jackson. It was my intention to show also this part of society. For me it is important to show a part of Iran and a part of the youth, that is different from the reception from the outside of the country. The concept of this division into real and surreal is that in the first part, the main topic is peace. When the actor Mohammed Reza Golzar appears, the film changes from the real to the surreal. The first part is reality and the second is dream. The director said about the movie, after its screening at the Berlin Festival: Here the plot shifts from realistic to spooky and metaphysical, when Toofan keeps on re-appearing, talking about dead dictators, weapons of mass destruction and parallel worlds. ![]() A mysterious stranger, Toofan, tells them he has settled the accident issue by paying off the other driver. ![]() After meeting their friend, Kami, who is planning to immigrate from Iran, they cause a road accident. Two friends, Arineh and Nobahar, cruise the streets of Tehran after leaving a party at Midnight. The plot is set at the beginning days of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's " Subsidy Reform Plan", and spans one single night. The title of the film is a reference to a song by Pink Floyd.
